Everythings Taken?

So, I just went through every possible three letter combination, checking out .coms, .nets, .infos, .us and every other common.extension and everything as of today, June 28 2009,  is taken.   I shouldn’t have been surprised, this should be a very popular combination, but that popular?  Wow, I am a little surprised.

So, I checked out the two letter plus a number combination (three characters total) and everything other than the two I bought (in dotcom and dotnet), see the for sale page, was available.   Now, that’s out of  a combination of over 22,230 posibilities (yes, I checked them all). Wow, again.  I am a bit surprised.

I was wondering what the attraction was to such not too common phrases would be.  But then I did some google searches for these.

The thing is, these three letter combinations can be used for a number of things, as abreviations for that group of keywords.  And, being as short as possible, they can be easy to remember.  They can be multi-use for the end user.  Making them very easy to market.  Also, they tend to sell pretty well on Sedo.com, my current domain aution of choice.  I’ve tried a few domain sale outlets, and so far, Sedo.com has been the top paying domain selling outlet.

You may be asking, what others have I tried.  Well, so far I have tried to sell on Ebay, godaddy, sedo and twitter.  Twitter?  Well, yes, you see twitter is, or so I’ve heard, is a good marketing/networking tool to get in touch with other domainers and reach them instantly.  You see, I say “so I’ve heard” because I have had very little success posting on twitter.  The thing with twitter is that your post can be lost in matter of seconds.  There is so much traffic on there that your post has little chance of being read.   Granted, having thousands of “followers” and reaching them instantaneously is very attractive, but the problem is that if all thousand followers post something within the same time frame your post will have very little chance of being read by anyone.  I think it began as a good idea but the end result was no where near the desired result.  Too much information can be a bad thing.

So, unless some of these three letter/number domains get dropped anytime soon, don’t go looking for any.  They are all taken!
